WAYNESBORO, Va. — A 77-year-old retired United Methodist clergyman has set out to walk 500 miles to raise money for Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (VADP). 

Hunter Mabry will walk 10 miles a week for 50 weeks to raise $5,000 for VADP.

Last week I was fortunate to be able to attend the Annual Awards Dinner put on by Death Penalty Focus in Los Angeles, California.  It was quite an experience to hear some giants in the realm of human rights speak and receive their awards.  I reflected on some earlier times in my life. More than a decade has passed since the state of Utah executed a convicted
murderer. Now, as the state prepares to once again apply the death penalty, is a good time for Utahns and their elected leaders to consider abandoning this archaic and deeply flawed form of punishment.

When the U.S. Supreme Court halted the execution of Hank Skinner in late March, much of the media coverage focused on the particulars of Skinner’s case: The near-execution of a possibly innocent man halted by a rare last-minute reprieve.
